The dominant lifeforms on Algryph are massive, six-limbed quadrupeds, called griffins. Griffins wield humanlike intelligence, and resemble many different species of bird and feline.
Over time, griffinkind joined together under powerful, sprawling City-States. These City-States had since united for a single cause: to cleanse the world of the murderous aerial thieves that plagued their tradeways. Bands of mainland mercenaries and soldiers, wing-cutters, blockaded the perimeter of the Scalding Sea to end the rogues' incursion and *β **KILL ALL PIRATES! *β
In the height of the United War on Piracy, droves of fugitives, refugees, rebels, and saboteurs took haven on an island in the heart of the Scalding Sea; crown-jewel of the Scalding Sea Trade Circuit, now the last and largest pirate stronghold, Insula Requiem.

A volcanic eruption obliterates the City of Rheigold, a once-opulent spearhead of the United War. For months, ash chokes the mainland, abating the arrival of Summer. Absent the suns' warmth, the weather turns to madness. Colossol storms spawn at the perimeter of the Sea, striking down would-be escapees. As the Sea crowds with refugees, the pirates and settlers of Insula Requiem vie for control of the island's dwindling resources.
